This is the sky over Shinri Beach on Kume Island, which I revisited last October. While painting, the profound silence I experienced there returned within me again.

My journey to Kume Island began with a "mysterious dream" I had several years ago. In that dream, I visited a tropical island in Asia where there was a cave for sacred rituals and a coastline covered in hexagonal rocks. Inside the cave, invited by a local priestess, we each called forth our deities. The deity of that land appeared as a merman, half-human and half-fish. My own deity manifested as a white snake, so huge that it covered the entire sky.

A few years later, I happened to see the photos of "Tatami-ishi" on Kume Island. I was stunned to find that the scenery was nearly identical to the place I had seen in my dream.

Guided by the dream, I finally set foot on Kume Island. As I gazed down from the plane at the deep blue sea tinged with a faint crimson glow, I remember being overcome by an inexplicable sense of nostalgia, and could not hold tears.

Reflecting on this entire journey, I titled this painting "Return to Myself." I can’t wait for the day when I shall return to that beautiful island.

これは、昨年10月に再訪した久米島、シンリ浜で眺めた空です。描いている間、あの時に味わった静寂が私の中に蘇ってきました。

私が久米島を訪れたのは、数年前に見た「不思議な夢」がきっかけでした。その夢の中で訪れたアジアのどこかにありそうな南国の島には、聖なる儀式が行われる洞窟と、六角形の岩が敷き詰められたように広がる海岸がありました。その洞窟で、私は現地の女性神職とともに、お互いの神を呼び出しました。その地の神は、上半身は人、下半身は魚という半人半魚の姿。そして私の神は、空を覆うほど巨大な白い蛇の姿をしていました。

数年後、久米島にある「畳石」の写真を偶然目にし、その光景が夢で見た場所とあまりに酷似していることに衝撃を受けました。

こうして私は、夢に導かれるようにして久米島へ降り立ちました。機内から見えた僅かに赤みを帯びた深い青色の海に、説明しがたい懐かしさが込み上げ、涙がこぼれたことを覚えています。

この一連の旅路を振り返り、この絵には「Return to Myself」という題名をつけました。またあの美しい島を訪れる日が待ち遠しいです。
