Gustav’s Sky, 2026

I have created a painting for my friends’ orchestra's next concert. The theme for this piece is Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5.

While this masterpiece is widely known for its dramatic journey “from despair to joy,” what resonated most deeply in my heart throughout all movements was the profound solitude Mahler must have carried within himself.

Even the famous 4th movement, the Adagietto, felt to me like a longing for an unattainable fantasy, as though he spent his entire life yearning for a love he could never fully receive.

Rather than depicting the rich complexity of the music itself, I wanted to create a painting dedicated to Mahler himself, who possessed no spiritual homeland, quietly walking alone and lost in deep thought.

The motif became the sky he might have looked up to as a child, and the sky he might have gazed upon during his contemplative journeys.

To create this, I referenced the sky I saw in Lutová (Chlum u Třeboně, South Bohemia) this past September. Though in a neighboring region, it is only about 80 km from Jihlava, where Mahler grew up.

Shortly after I began painting, the title "Gustav’s Sky" floated into my mind. I hope the feeling of nostalgia and peace I felt under that sky reaches Mahler’s soul across time.
